I’ve talked to several service professionals lately who are having a difficult time finding quality employees through traditional avenues. But a new recruiting channel is proving to be quite effective.

Social networking is becoming an increasingly important tool in the recruiter’s tool box. Social media is a form of networking, so why not use your existing, growing online network to locate, vet and potentially hire new employees or contractors? Here are a few tips for using your network to hire new recruits:

  • Energize your search by using your LinkedIn network — send job opportunities via in-network messaging. LinkedIn is a great way to find potential applicants who are already backed by members of your professional network.
  • Create a Facebook group to help attract graduate recruits. (Here is a list of great ways to use Facebook for hiring ala Jobzcafe.com.)
  • Promote your opportunities to your Twitter network.
  • Blog about your job opportunities and tag them accordingly; this will help your post be indexed and displayed through Google and other blog directories.

Remember that your social network is a cog in the wheel of your recruiting strategy and that simply setting up a Facebook page isn’t a strategy at all. Think through your recruitment needs and how they effect your overall business goals. Define your measures of success; if you keep a goal in your sights, you’ll always be able to gauge how well your strategy is working.
